When it comes to migration, a lot of Nigerians automatically have Western or Asian countries in mind. There are, however, many African countries that make for good choices. If you’re up for African migration, consider Nigeria Abroad’s top 10 (in no particular order):
Often referred to as the Sleeping Giant of North Africa, Algeria is the largest country in Africa by area—with one of the best education systems too. In Algeria, you can visit the Sahara Desert—a beautiful sight—as long as you don’t plan trekking to Europe from there. If you have a future in photography, Algeria is known for its aesthetic and historic buildings. But if you’re only on a visit, watch the tour guides: there have been stories of petty theft, though Oshodi and Upper Iweka may have prepared you ahead. Another good news: obtaining an Algerian visa isn’t such a tedious process, and you can find all the information you need here.
Botswana’s currency is strong. Power supply is steady. The country is 6th on best system of education in Africa. As if Botswana didn’t already have me asking for a visa over steady electricity, World Bank's business report says it’s one of the best places to do business in Africa. Its economy is fast rising and Botswana’s pula is one of the highest currencies on the continent. Notwithstanding the advantages, you might want to take caution and keep it in your pants: efforts have failed to stem Botswana’s soaring HIV/AIDS prevalence rate—a global third.
With a strong currency and economy, Egypt ranks high amongst the best countries in Africa—known also for ancient civilization. Aside some racist locals and reported increase in human trafficking (which I believe can be avoided through legal migration), Egypt is a good option. Though tedious and complex, its visa process is eventually worth the stress. At least it’s better than journeying to Europe through the desert or the Mediterranean.
Remember our story on why Nigerians travel to Gabon and never return? All you need to move to Gabon is there, except that like others who went before, you may not return. Stable electricity and decent roads are a good enough reason for any Nigerian with a Toyota to stay there forever. Problem with Gabon’s jolly-jolly though is the high cost of living. Its capital, Libreville, is 12th most expensive city in the world. The visa process is smooth and easy because you’re not coming back!
Great tax rates, strong education system, cultural and religious diversity, and steady electricity too—coupled with beautiful beaches to chill and get your tan on. These are a few of the great qualities of this Island. The climate and environment are warm and nice, as are the citizens known for hospitality. The migration process is not complex. One big drawback: Mauritius is ranked 7th out of 15 countries with natural disasters. It’s possible that one minute you are walking, next the ground may shift.
Aside its rich cultural heritage, Morocco still has a lot to offer. Considered Africa’s 4th strongest currency, the Moroccan dirham gives the country some bragging rights. For Nigerians who love food, you might want to pool together your visa money and start planning your move, food there na die! Haggling is also a Moroccan culture, so it will definitely feel like home to us. If you can price down Iya Sherrif’s red oil from N1500 to N700 a bottle, you already have a future in Morocco. The visa process is easy as long as you follow the right procedure. However, security is poor. And some big Moroccan cities are dirty; but if you’re coming from Lagos mainland, you’ll feel at home on this one.
Coming from Nigeria, you probably won’t be too thrilled by the sunny weather in Rwanda. But this is what you have been practicing for in Kano, Sokoto and co. There is enough to make up for the mild discomfort though. Rwanda has successfully ticked the box as the safest country in Africa. This might not feel like a big deal to someone from other places, but not worrying about insecurity or insurgency is a big deal. Rwanda’s visa process is easy and details are available here. It is also easier to do business there because Rwanda operates on a digital level. Its education system works, there is steady power supply and it’s one of the biggest vegetable markets in Africa. Hello Vitamin C!
Seychelles is one of Africa’s best with education. In fact, its education compares favorably with the global best. Again, steady electricity, good roads and tourist attraction centers. Lagos people might find this place weird—the population is less than 100,000. The not-so-good part of this acclaimed paradise is the high cost of food. This may be hard for some people, but definitely not Nigerians who have lived in Abuja and Port Harcourt. That isn’t too bad if you ask me, seeing as the visa process is straightforward and easy.
9. South Africa
Strong currency and development draw people to South Africa, as do gold and platinum. Commendable education system too. Imagine finishing a 4-year course exactly in four years. ASUU cannot relate. SA also runs one of the best aviation programs in the world, in case you want to fly planes. The weather is friendly, the culture rich and diverse. Visa processes though can be tedious and rising xenophobia against Nigerians in South Africa undermines the country. But if you stay off their women and try not to succeed too much, you may live long in SA.
If you can speak Arabic, then you might start dusting your international passport. Tunisia’s education is 2nd-best in Africa. No strikes. No potbellied lecturers who want to see you fail. Fast rising among the developing countries of the world, Tunisia is also progressing in agriculture, tourism, and petroleum resources. Its dinar is Africa’s 2nd-strongest currency (The naira has definitely left the group chat).
