Is the PMP certification exam hard?
The PMP exam tests your ability to understand the Project Management Institute's approach to project management including traditional (waterfall), hybrid, and agile methodologies. Most project managers are trained to use principles of project management based on their understanding of day-to-day application. However, the exam is not testing how you specifically apply project management at your work. Instead, it is testing whether you have the knowledge of PMI's principles in building a team, motivating a team, being an effective scrum master, managing risks, dealing with stakeholders, etc.
These methods may be somewhat or radically different from what skills you use every day. Most project managers who take our classes immediately notice that the content is much more in-depth than what they expected. This is because most of our students practicing their profession are not specifically being asked by their customer or sponsor to choose one of four actions in response, all of which are very narrowly distinct from one another. So, yes, the exam can be difficult for someone who has not recently taken a standardized exam format or whose knowledge in project management has evolved from their own development of processes, tools, and techniques during their career. Therefore, you need an exam-focused training.
Who should take the PMP exam?
In order to take the PMP exam, you must first satisfy the PMP exam eligibility requirements. This means that you provide your project descriptions of 36 months (3 years) of non-overlapping project management experience within the past 8 years if you have a 4-year college degree. If you have a high-school equivalent or an Associate's degree, you must provide your project descriptions of 60 months of non-overlapping project management experience within the past 8 years. It is easy to get confused. We offer complimentary application review prior to your submission to the PMI, when you send your project descriptions to [emailprotected]
PMI is not indicating you should have a job title of project manager. If your job involves duties and tasks related to initiating, planning, executing, monitoring/controlling, and closing a project, it qualifies. On the other hand, if you are in an agile environment and your role involves being a scrum master or a facilitator coordinating a self-organized team in an innovative and change-driven environment, it qualifies. So, it is possible you have a job title of a portfolio manager and meet the PMP exam requirements. It is also possible you have a title of business analyst and qualify for the requirements by doing the job of a project manager.
